OPG Ammis

Alen planted his first asparagus seedlings 5 years ago in a field near his family home, and today his production spans just under 2 hectares.

- This is a perennial plant, it does not need to be planted every year. It is a permanent crop that, with regular maintenance, can yield every year for fifteen years or more, explains Alen Smiljanić, family farm Ammis, Brezovica.

Harvesting asparagus still requires human hands and a special tool so as not to damage the plant. Alen has no issues with labour because his wife, children and neighbours help him, as asparagus must be harvested daily during the picking season, which lasts about 60 days, to prevent it from overgrowing.

He is pleased with the price and distribution, as he delivers part of the asparagus to a nearby buyer and sells the rest at markets in Virovitica, Daruvar and Koprivnica.
