Reishi mushroom, or as it is also known, „ling zhi“, which translates to "herb with spiritual potency", or mushroom of immortality, has been used for over 2000 years in Chinese medicine. The fruiting body of the mushroom contains several hundred different bioactive compounds (polysaccharides, ganoderic and betulinic acid, triterpenoids, ergosterols, and adenosine), enabling Reishi mushroom extracts to cleanse the body of toxins, boost and regulate the immune and endocrine systems, protect the body against tumour formation, accelerate macrophage production, and regulate T and B lymphocytes.
Scientists highlight two key components in Reishi mushrooms: beta-glucans and triterpenes. Beta-glucans are believed to be responsible for the anti-cancer effect. They do this by stimulating and strengthening the immune system, which can reduce tumour proliferation and prevent tumour metastasis. Stimulating and boosting the immune system brings other benefits as well, such as reducing susceptibility to colds and flu and preventing other illnesses. Triterpenes, known as „ganoderic acids“, are considered responsible for supporting organ health, particularly the liver and heart, by improving blood circulation. Traditionally, Reishi is not used to fight a specific illness or after a disease has set in; rather, it is taken preventatively in combination with a balanced diet and exercise, helping to support overall health and harmony in the body.
Numerous rigorous scientific studies have been conducted to prove the health benefits of Reishi mushrooms. In April 2016, a meta-study entitled „Clinical effects of G. lucidum on long-term survival, tumour response, host immune functions, and quality of life in cancer patients, as well as side effects“ was completed. The study covered 5 trials analyzing 373 participants suffering from various stages of cancer. Although the study could not establish with certainty that Reishi mushrooms alone were as effective as other treatment methods, it revealed that „patients who received G. lucidum (Reishi) alongside chemotherapy responded positively compared to chemotherapy alone“. It was also found that „patients in the G. lucidum (Reishi) group had a relatively better quality of life post-treatment than those in the control group“.
